Lucy Grzejszczak has some memory of life in Poland before she, her mother and sisters were deported to Germany, but her formative years were spent in a labour camp. The deportation was not unexpected because Lucy's father had already been sent to work in Belgium. While they waited for the Germans to arrive, Lucy's mother Jozefa dressed her and her sisters before they went to bed so that they would be warmly clad when they were sent away. Lucy recalls the night the Germans came:

"That night I remember being woken up by my sister and the baby was crying. Two German officers with swastikas on their armbands said, 'You're going to Germany'. We all went outside and I remember the clear moon. Mum made us all kneel down and 'kiss the earth that nurtured you'."
