Tynan Street

When land became available in Tynan Street, migrants jumped at the chance because it was within walking distance of the Emmco factory where many of them worked. The building phenomenon was remarkable also because of the co-operation between migrants, who assisted one-another with the building (few could afford a professional builder) and let out rooms to each other to help keep rental costs down. Many other migrant families shared houses while they saved to buy their own place, usually with people from the same country.
